Stem Cell Therapy Side Effects and Risks
Clinics routinely describe stem cell treatment as having "no significant side effects." That is not an accurate statement, and it is one of the claims regulators treat as a red flag.
Here is what is actually documented.
Common and expected
These are frequent, usually mild, and typically resolve within days to weeks:
- Pain and swelling at the injection site
- A temporary flare of joint pain in the first week
- Bruising and soreness at the bone marrow or liposuction harvest site
- Fatigue for a day or two
- Headache and low-grade fever, more common after intravenous infusion
- Nausea
Serious risks
These are less common but documented in the medical literature and in regulatory actions.
Infection. The most significant risk with unapproved products. There have been outbreaks of serious bacterial bloodstream and joint infections traced to contaminated umbilical cord blood preparations, resulting in hospitalisation. Because these products are not manufactured under approved standards, sterility is not independently assured.
Blindness. Patients have been permanently blinded following injection of fat-derived cells into the eye for macular degeneration. This is among the most cited harms in the field and is the reason regulators became urgently interested in the sector.
Tumour formation. Documented cases include a spinal mass following stem cell injections received at unregulated clinics. Rare, but not hypothetical.
Blood clots and pulmonary embolism. Reported following intravenous infusion.
Immune reactions. More relevant with donor-derived cells, and a reason "allogeneic is completely safe" is an overstatement.
Procedure-specific harm. Nerve injury, bleeding, or damage from imaging-guided injection into the spine.
Why "it’s your own cells, so it’s safe" is misleading
This reassurance is offered constantly. It has three problems.
First, most of what makes these procedures risky is not the cells — it is the harvest, the processing, the sterility of the lab, and the injection itself. Your own cells can still be contaminated by an unclean process.
Second, cells that are culture-expanded in a laboratory are no longer simply "your own cells." They have been grown, manipulated, and exposed to growth media, which is precisely why regulators treat them as a drug.
Third, many clinics using this phrase are administering donor cord tissue products, which are not your own cells at all.
The most common harm is financial
By volume, the harm patients most often experience is not a medical complication. It is spending $10,000 to $40,000 — frequently from retirement savings, a home equity line, or a high-interest medical credit card — on a treatment that does not change their condition.
That harm rarely appears in a side-effect list, which is why we are putting it in one.
Questions that reduce your risk
- Where is the product manufactured, and under what quality standards?
- How is sterility tested, and can I see the certificate for my specific lot?
- Who performs the injection, and what is their licence number?
- What is your complication rate, and how do you track it?
- What happens, specifically, if I develop an infection after I go home?
- Is there an institutional review board overseeing this?
When to seek urgent care afterwards
Fever above 38°C, spreading redness or heat at an injection site, severe or worsening pain, shortness of breath, chest pain, or any sudden change in vision after a procedure warrant immediate medical attention. Tell the treating clinician exactly what you received, where, and when — bring your paperwork.
